Photo Identification

The unique pattern of white dots, swirls and patches together with distinguishing markings or scars along the flanks and upper body of the whale shark may be used to identify individual sharks.

 

Digital photographs may be submitted to Us or directly to WILDBOOK for Whale Sharks @ www.whaleshark.org/.

Pattern identifying algorithms are used using either left (preferred), or right side of the shark from the gills to the front of the dorsal fin.
