Whale Sharks - Gentle Giants


Conservation Status


In 2016 Whale Sharks are declared by IUCN as ENDANGERED!!!

 

 

The IUCN classification of the species is Endangered having been updated in 2016 from Threatened, mainly due to slaughter for their fins.

 

Like all sharks the fin is used for shark fin soup in many Asian countries.

 

Estimates place the number of whale sharks killed each year at 6 - 8000 individuals. No data exists about world population numbers.
