Makeba has been adopted!
Makeba
Makeba was also first reported during our 2024 expedition, making her another new individual added to the global database. Her most striking feature is the injured dorsal fin, which may have been caused by an old propeller strike. This injury highlights the risks whale sharks face due to human activities such as fishing gear and vessel strikes. However, Makeba’s resilience is a testament to the incredible strength of these creatures, and by tracking her movements, scientists hope to learn more about how these injuries may affect her migration and behavior. UPDATES:
We lost track of Makeba after she departed from the Galapagos Islands. She was equipped with satellite tag #262714. Unfortunately, we may never know what became of the tag or Makeba herself—unless she is sighted again, possibly reported by a Citizen Scientist.
